Nintendo has released version 2.0 of its Switch Online mobile apps for iOS and Android, which includes a new appearance and some quality-of-life enhancements. The app was released in 2017, shortly after the Nintendo Switch was released. It’s made to function alongside the Switch, with features like online voice chat that aren’t available on the device itself.
The most noteworthy enhancement in the 2.0 version, in my opinion, is that it makes it easier to identify and share your buddy code, a tedious 12-digit number that is the primary method of adding friends to Nintendo’s online service. Rather than needing to physically copy the code from your Switch console before sharing it with a friend, the update allows you to do so with a single tap from the app. Your friend will still have to manually key in the 12 numbers to add you to their console, but it is now much easier to share the code.
The other changes included in the 2.0 release are modest. The app now displays which pals are online and allows you to “modify your online-status settings,” according to Nintendo. These are such basic features that it’s surprising they weren’t included in an app that was released almost five years ago, but given Nintendo’s traditional focus on single- and local-multiplayer games, it’s not surprising.
