Lego Isn’t Just for Kids. Here’s How to Become an Adult Lego Master.

Must read

Like many Gen Xers, I rediscovered my childhood love of Lego when the corporate started releasing Star Wars–themed sets again in 1999.1 That particular licensing, mixed with the soothing nature of constructing the units, was a double dopamine hit of nostalgia for this ’80s child. And from then on I’d decide up a few new releases every year for the reminiscence journey.

Along with Star Wars units, I additionally adored something with a spooky theme, just like the Monster Fighters series and the Scooby-Doo line. However, I thought about myself as an off-the-cuff collector at finest. Till the pandemic, when the halt in touring or eating out and even shopping for garments abruptly left me with some additional funds to start constructing a group large enough that storage grew to become a problem. Lego has wonderful resale worth, so I satisfied myself that every buy was funding, in addition to therapy and a reality diversion all rolled into one fairly, rattly package deal.

I don’t have youngsters of my very own, however, I’ve already picked out a number of “distraction units” at handoff to my buddies’ younger’s so that they’ll avoid my more elaborate builds.

As Lego packing containers continued to pile up in my house over the previous 12 months, a way of disgrace crept in. However not as a result of I used to be shopping for toys—I was anxious that I wasn’t being artistic sufficient. I revel within the feeling of management Lego supplies, however, does that make me the villain in The Lego Film? A grown-up who freaks out if a toddler tries to play with my shows? I don’t have youngsters of my very own, however, I’ve already picked out a number of “distraction units” at handoff to my buddies’ younger’s so that they’ll avoid the more elaborate builds in my workplace.

I don’t need to be this particular person although, so I made a decision it was time to embrace the more inclusive and imaginative facet of my passion. I got down to turn into a greater AFOL—the official time period for a Grownup Fan of Lego—and alongside the way in which I found many extra acronyms, like-minded communities, shopping for hacks, storage, and resale ideas, and even free software program for digital constructing. Not one of the information I dug up shall be new to a skilled AFOL. But when, like me, you’ve discovered yourself falling deeper into the world of Lego, take into account this a primer on learning how to construct a greater assortment and make buddies alongside the way in which. (However not Lego Friends—these you must purchase.)

The Lego lexicon

Many acronyms and phrases get tossed around within the AFOL group. Throughout my analysis and interviews, I discovered a number of phrases I’d by no means heard earlier than, and also you’ll see a number of talk about all through this piece. For a deeper dive into the language of Lego, learn this detailed glossary to study issues like rainbow warriors and greebling, phrases I absolutely plan to make use of incorrectly the subsequent time I get the munchies after a homosexual delight parade.

  • AFOL variations: Some variations embody TFOL (Teen Fan of Lego), AFFOL (Grownup Feminine Fan of Lego), GayFOL (Homosexual Fan of Lego).
  • Alternate construct: This refers to independently offered directions that present learns how to construct one thing utterly new utilizing solely Lego items from a single set. I’ve but to open my new Dinosaur Fossils 21320, however, I plan to skip the included directions and go straight to this unbelievable dragon skeleton created by person Janotechnic (the how-to PDF prices about solely $8).
  • Unlawful construct: This refers to forcing Lego items collectively in methods they’re not deliberately designed to suit, like wedging a tile between studs in order that one stands perpendicular to the opposite. I assumed we have been supposed to get artistic!
  • LUG: That is the acronym for Lego Consumer Group—that means a bunch of AFOLs (a bucket of AFOLs? a drawerful of AFOLs?) who get collectively to construct socially.
  • LAN: This stands for Lego Ambassador Community. LAN is a division throughout the Lego Group that helps facilitate communication between the corporate and AFOLs throughout the globe. It’s basically a company appreciation program that you must apply for, however, there isn’t any monetary compensation, simply boasting rights. Acceptance into the LAN ranks means you fall into one of many three following classes:
    • RLUG: This stands for Acknowledged Lego Consumer Group—mainly a LUG, however, like, official.
    • RLOC: That is the acronym for Acknowledged Lego On-line Neighborhood, which is an RLUG that exists solely online, as dialogue teams and boards the place like-minded of us from all around the world can share concepts and host constructing competitions. (Many RLUGs needed to turn into RLOCs throughout the pandemic attributable to social distancing.)
    • RLFM: This stands for Acknowledged Lego Fan Media. For those who’ve acquired a social media account, weblog, or website devoted to your love of Lego, changing into an RLFM helps improve your visibility and supplies perks, like early press releases and free units to evaluate. Though there isn’t any monetary compensation, anybody can individually apply to turn into a part of Lego’s affiliate income program.
  • MOC: That is the acronym for My Personal Creation, referring to a unique construct. And it’s pronounced “mock,” as I used to be gently knowledgeable after I stated “Em-Oh-See” for the third time throughout one of my interviews. Many AFOLs promote directions for his or her MOCs as PDF downloads with an elements record, so anybody can construct them. Common websites the place you should buy plans for unique builds embody Rebrickable, MocsMarket, and The Brothers Brick. The final word reward is to have followers upvote a MOC submission on Lego Ideas after which have the Lego Group put your creation into manufacturing. The latest winners embody a Medieval Blacksmith and a superbly detailed Grand Piano, which you’ll really play.
  • SigFig: This refers back to the personalized Lego Minifigures that many AFOLs use as avatars.

Taking good care of AFOL enterprise

The Lego Group actively courts and caters to AFOLs, most publicly on Fox’s Lego Masters, a captivating actuality present that includes grown-ups competing with elaborately themed builds (the second season of the US model, hosted by Will Arnett, debuts June 1, 2021). And the corporate’s über-expensive choices, like these in its Final Collectors Collection, are meant extra for show than for play—fashions just like the $700 USC Imperial Star Destroyer 75252 come boxed in premium packaging with more-sophisticated graphics. Beginning in 2020, newer units aimed toward AFOLs, just like the $550 Colosseum 10276, even have an 18+ designation on the field. It looks like a shrewd enterprise transfer, one which removes any stigma a grownup would possibly really feel, and it makes the units that rather more fascinating to underage youngsters. However I used to be inquisitive about Lego’s official reasoning, and I reached out to ask in regards to the new score.

“The concept behind what we name this grownup technique is to simply talk to adults that it’s okay to love Lego, that it’s nonetheless enjoyable,” Carl Merriam, a Lego senior designer, instructed me in an interview. He’s chargeable for units just like the NASA Apollo Saturn V 92176 and a brand new Haunted House 10273. The latter comes with the newer 18+ label (a label that replaces Creator Knowledgeable branding). Merriam packed the completed construct filled with intelligent Easter eggs from vintage sets (video) that Millennials grew up with, which includes characters and artifacts from the Adventurers series, amongst others. And plenty of YouTubers have taken to attempting to uncover them all (video).

Constructing group

After I first started looking for our fellow AFOLs, I used to be nervous that I would uncover a snarky acronym for instruction-book sticklers like me, one thing like BAFOL (Boring Grownup Fan of Lego). So I used to be relieved when Lego Masters finalist Boone Langston instructed me in an interview that I’m thought-about a “purist”—a time period that additionally applies to followers who use solely official Lego elements for his or their unique builds (versus, say, portray a brand new face on a Minifigure or custom-making a material cape).

Langston (who makes cash from his YouTube channel by promoting merch and his personal MOCs) was additionally fast to level out that there’s a large spectrum of AFOLs, with of us on one finish “who solely construct units and show them and hold them without end, and on the opposite finish, individuals who haven’t constructed a set in years and solely construct their very own creations. I believe most individuals are a form of on this bell curve in between.”

The web AFOL group, significantly on YouTube, is full of heavy hitters like JangBricks, Beyond the Brick, Brick Builder, and MandR Productions. Their mixed channel views and subscribers attain thousands and thousands, and the content material is very entertaining and informative. But it surely doesn’t take long to note that the scene is overwhelmingly male.

I used to be excited about seeking out more diverse channels with distinctive POVs. And I additionally needed to seek out ones the place a beginner AFOL may need a neater time making buddies as a result of the audiences are smaller—channels the place somebody has a greater probability of getting a dialog going with the host or different followers throughout the feedback sections and through live streams. I like one channel by a girl who goes by Emmasaurus, a comparatively new Lego fan who just lately did a deep mathematical dive to seek out out how much more consumers pay per brick (video) for licensed Lego units like Marvel and Star Wars, versus for Lego’s personal mental property, reminiscent of Ninjago and City. Her video on the topic is crammed with graphs and charts, and the tip outcomes aren’t too stunning—Lego’s personal IP units are cheaper. However, her methodology is spectacular to look at.

I spoke with one other new AFOL YouTuber named Chinna Campbell, who goes by CC, to get away of what it’s like attempting to make a mark together with her Lego channel, Cafe Corner, in an already saturated area. “There haven’t been plenty of ladies within the house,” she instructed me. “However I believe now issues are altering and folks have been actually supportive of that. I’ve tried to deliver up some, not controversial matters, however matters I really feel like persons are a type of skirting round.”

On her latest utility to turn into an RLFM, she instructed LAN that the aim of her channel is to showcase that anybody can love and revel in Lego, irrespective of their race or gender. “I’d say that there’s an extreme lack of ahead dealing with Black or folks of color creators,” she instructed me, referring to folks whose YouTube movies contain chatting with the digital camera, fairly than, say, stop-motion Lego builds.

Campbell additionally had a tough time discovering a SigFig that she felt represented her, till a pal created a digital one. “Lego doesn’t actually produce flesh-toned Minifigures outdoors of licensed themes,” she explained in one video. “This isn’t a Lego subject, it’s extra of a Hollywood subject. There’s not plenty of Black and Brown actors which are main movies, and thus being represented in Lego units for me. I’m not saying ‘down with the yellow minifig.’” She dedicates movies to constructing {custom} minifigs utilizing unique Lego elements for BIPOC superheroes like Ironheart and America Chavez.

One every of Campbell’s ideas to assist Lego to make followers really feel extra included is for the corporate to start making totally different pores and skin tones out there as unfastened elements on the Lego Shops’ Build A Mini tower. Her level of Hollywood illustration being a big part of the SigFig range subject is effectively taken, although. And one seemingly simple course correction—not less than throughout the Lego Star Wars line—would contain lots of the no-name human minifig characters that aren’t attributed to a particular actor. These minifigs include detachable helmets that reveal human faces: Insurgent commandos and floor crew; Resistance officers and troopers; Imperial floor crew, officers, pilots, and technicians; and Imperial troopers of all types. Of those 228 extras2, I discovered solely 5 (two First Order crew members, a Fleet Engineer/Gunner, a Naboo safety guard, and a Bespin guard) that characteristic darkish complexion. Transferring ahead, why not supply extra range with these characters?

Whereas trying to find illustration and like-minded of us throughout the LGBTQ+, I joined a personal Fb group for GayFOLs that has members from over 41 nations. Minifig range is a frequent matter of dialog and is on show in lots of the posted MOCs.

Lego my pockets

Relying on how deep into amassing Lego you get, it may turn into an absurdly costly passion. New UCS units value as a lot as $800, and as soon as a construct is retired, costs are inclined to skyrocket in aftermarket channels. As of this writing, there’s an uncommon Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series TIE Interceptor 7181 listed on Amazon for $1,899.99—and it doesn’t include the unique field. There’s even a website, known as BrickEconomy, that’s devoted to the present and projected values of Lego units. And French police are on the hunt for an international ring of Lego thieves.

Bricklink is the world’s largest secondary marketplace for Lego, with greater than 10,000 resale distributors in 70 nations. You’ll discover units of previous and new, unfastened bricks, sticker sheets, minifigs, classic catalogs, and constructing directions for each unique Lego unit and MOCs. The enterprise was acquired by the Lego Group in 2019, a transfer that was thought-about controversial by many AFOLs who noticed the acquisition as Lego attempting to get in on aftermarket earnings. Some urged that the positioning is solely a goldmine for user data. The Lego Group’s acknowledged objective is that the purchase strengthens its relationship with AFOLs. Personally, I simply hope it means Bricklink’s website will get a correct design overhaul since its personal interface is about as painful to navigate as strolling barefoot throughout a hardwood flooring affected by 2×4 bricks.

The first strategies of buying Lego (and discovering an occasional deal) embody:

  • Lego.com: Begin on the supply. And if you happen to turn into a member of the free VIP program, you may rack up factors by way of buying and no-cost choices—like taking surveys and sharing social media posts—to realize entry to perks like free seasonal/promotional units, reductions, Legoland tickets, and extra. If a hard-to-find set that’s nonetheless in manufacturing is out of inventory on the positioning, enter your zip code to see if a Lego retailer close to you has one. If it does, name forward and ask to have the set put apart for you. (However, a retailer will maintain it for under a day.) YouTuber TD Bricks has some sensible tips about learning how to maximize the Pick-A-Brick wall, that is slowly being opened again up in shops. (Throughout the pandemic, staff needed to decide the bricks for you, which concerned plenty of pointing and plenty of muffled cries of, “No, the opposite one!”)
  • Mass market and native retailers: Walmart and Target are sometimes effectively stocked. And Goal, for instance, typically has offers the place you may obtain a present card if you happen to hit a minimal spend. However, they’re not the one big-box video games on the town. For those who’re on the hunt for a hard-to-find set that’s nonetheless in circulation, like a Star Wars Creation calendar on November 30, you should definitely additionally examine retailers like Finest Purchase, Barnes & Noble, and Kohl’s, in addition to native unbiased toy and comics shops. You by no means know the place you would possibly get fortunate.
  • Bricklink: As talked about, the navigation is clunky, and the costs are normally simply as jacked up as these on eBay, however, hold digging. I just lately discovered a retired, unopened 2014 Sandcrawler 75059 for its unique retail value.
  • Ebay: Retired and current-yet-hard-to-find units are sometimes listed on eBay as “Purchase Now” choices at absurdly excessive costs by scalpers. However, offers can nonetheless be discovered by way of a very good old-school bloodthirsty public sale. Most people know this trick: Place your excessive bid at a barely random quantity of cents above what you’re keen to pay. If another person’s max bid is $135.50, your $136.78 will win, however, be ready to observe the ultimate seconds carefully. Additionally, keep in mind to train restraint; one other probability will arrive, so don’t get so caught up that your win appears like a loss since you paid considerably greater than you’d deliberate. For those who’re bidding on a used set, learn the outline carefully to ensure it’s full, and check out the vendor’s evaluations. Be ready to scrub your order as soon as it arrives.
  • Brick Owl: This online market is way smaller than Bricklink, however, it may be good for comparability buying and the occasional uncommon discovery.
  • Bricks & Minifigs: Lego Masters finalist Boone Langston purchased his first bag of unfastened bricks at one among these brick-and-mortar shops that promote each new and used Lego, and plenty of LUGs and RLUGs use them as assembly spots.
  • Conventions: Massive-scale gatherings have been on hiatus throughout the pandemic. However, in regular instances, many conventions are held all year long the place AFOLs showcase their MOCs and followers can meet with Lego designers. The most important gatherings embody Brickworld and BrickUniverse (each of which host giant metropolis conventions, in addition to smaller regional occasions), and BrickCon in Seattle. At any of those, TheBrickBlogger.com notes that you simply will discover a wider number of Lego merchandise on the market from distributors on a primary day. However, you’re more likely to discover higher offers on the final day, when cubicles are packing up and trying to unload inventory.
  • Shopping for unfastened bricks in bulk: Examine the standard suspects, like eBay, Etsy, Craigslist, yard gross sales, swap meets, thrift shops, and nieces and nephews hitting junior excessive (except they’re TFOLs). The value per pound of an unsorted, blended lot varies wildly. However, in 2020, Lego collector Nathan Masters wrote a weblog submit for Brickset.com wherein he broke down the price of his private purchases to determine the value of loose Lego pieces per pound. He admits that the estimation math could be tough: “The unbelievable variation of Lego items makes it laborious to nail down a good common for what number of items shall be in any given pound of Lego,” he wrote. “Accounting for potential off-brand and random toys blended in with the remaining makes it practically not possible to set a regular charge.”

After sorting and counting his previous 20 purchases, Masters calculated that unfastened Lego items go for anyplace from $three to $10 a pound, with anyplace from 300 to 600 items per pound, assuming that the majority lot is made up of all actual Lego items. Masters doesn’t reveal the place he made his purchases, however, a fast scan of eBay at the time of this writing confirmed larger costs, in addition to the wild value variations Masters talked about. Two totally different top-rated sellers confirmed stark variations, with one providing 10 kilos of unfastened, cleaned Lego pieces for $150 ($15 a pound), and one other providing one-pound cleaned lots for $25 (with every pound containing not less than one minifig). All different issues being equal, which means you’re paying a $10 premium for the minifig on the latter’s sale.

Subscription companies

The concept of a Netflix for bricks appears tempting for somebody who likes to construct a set, show it for a bit, after which pack it again away till the subsequent urge to construct it arises. Sadly, we’ve seen the latest negative reviews about customer support experiences for companies reminiscent of Netbricks.biz and TheMinifigClub.com, neither of those is affiliated with the Lego Group.

Will Lego make you wealthy?

Due to the resale worth, amassing Lego units could make filling your pockets as simple as emptying it, however, I’ve blended emotions on the subject of reselling my very own. From an ethical perspective, I hate the concept of value gouging anybody, however, there have been instances in my previous when a previous impulse buy helped pay a number of payments between freelance jobs. That stated I’d by no means record merchandise on eBay for a “purchase now” value at an exorbitant value. I’ve had plenty of success with eBay auctions ending above what the positioning lists as the present trending common value of my specific merchandise, and I imagine that establishing vendor belief is vital. Ask consumers to go away suggestions particularly mentioning that the units you offered them weren’t lacking any items, as soon as they’d an opportunity to construct them and see for themselves.

For those who desire an extra altruistic path, take into account donating your previous Lego units to the Lego Group’s RePlay program. Simply field up the bricks and request a free delivery label—this system takes care of sorting and cleaning, after which it donates the bricks to organizations like Train for America and the Boys & Women Golf equipment of Boston.

Cleansing, sorting and storing your Lego haul

We have already got an entire piece of information on how to clean loose Lego pieces, liberating them from pet hair, sticky thriller spills, and finger grease. However as soon as dry, what’s the easiest way to kind and retailer a group? We’ve got some toy storage ideas for kids. However, a busy AFOL engaged in a MOC wants some more advanced choices.

Sorting your bricks

There are two major strategies for sorting an unfastened Lego assortment: by color or by category. The selection will all the time come down to private desire. However everybody I spoke with, in addition to most Lego consultants online, agree that it’s useful to resolve which sort of group is best for you based mostly on the dimensions of your assortment. Carl Merriam instructed me he thinks that with fewer than 5,000 items, it’s superb to kind by color earlier than beginning to divide into classes (that means bricks, plates, tiles, and so forth). BrickArchitect.com suggests beginning that very same degree of sorting when you creep north of three,000 items. Collections of 10,000 items and up will probably profit from separating items out into frequent elements—like solely bricks, plates, and tiles of various colors—with a number of broader classes. As a result of it will get a lot simpler to identify, say, a number of purple 1×2 bricks in a sea of 1×2 bricks of various colors, fairly than rooting round in a bin or drawer crammed with purple bricks of all sizes.

As soon as (or if) your assortment begins heading north of 50,000, you will get far more particular by pulling items out into extra subcategories, like a bin of solely 2×2 bricks in a single color. However once more, as Lego Masters finalist Boone Langston instructed me, “The way in which you kind ought to help the way in which your mind works.” BrickArchitect.com comprises an in-depth breakdown of different methods to both get you began or assist with a reorganization, in case your present methodology isn’t working. You should definitely learn the feedback, too, since many AFOLS weigh in with their very own spectacular sorting programs, together with this massive organizational flowchart.

Storing your bricks

Storing your Lego assortment additionally comes down to private desire, in addition to your house limitations. There’s no scarcity of YouTubers displaying off massive storerooms with tons of small drawers and bins (builder Alice Finch’s tidy collection (video) of over four million items is especially spectacular). “Some folks simply go and make investments a ton of cash into some large, very nice unified storage system, and that’s nice and actually works effectively for some,” Langston stated. “For me, I simply can’t stand spending cash on furnishings after I might be spending cash on extra elements.” He likes $1 Sterilite 6-quart boxes and shelving models he builds himself or will get totally free.

There are two frequent storage programs you’ll see in lots of AFOL and TFOL YouTube movies. The primary is modular shelving, just like the IKEA Kallax, typically used for displaying constructed units and MOCs. For unfastened items, plastic drawers just like the massively fashionable Akro-Mils 44 drawer 10144 are sometimes noticed and endorsed. Although senior employees author Doug Mahoney (who used this identical mannequin for {hardware} storage in his storage after his child failed to make use of it for Lego storage) warns, “The drawers should not be linked to the body in any method, and it’s actually light-weight. If it ideas over you’ve acquired drawers and their contents all around the flooring.” Contemplate your self warned. However, inserting a small weight in one of many backside drawers ought to assist. And with the ability to pull a drawer all the way in which out is a plus once you’re rooting around for the fitting bricks. For those who’re feeling extra-cautious, furniture straps will anchor this mannequin to the wall.

BrickArchitect.com presents free downloadable labels so that you’ll know the place everything is with a fast look. And the printouts are suitable with most Brother label makers, together with our runner-up pick for best label maker, the Brother PT-D450. (However, actually, painter’s tape and a Sharpie work simply as effectively.)

Constructing Lego without the bricks

I’ve been spending plenty of time with Studio, Bricklink’s free design program, which helps you to create digital MOCs. You possibly can then order the bricks wanted to create an undertaking IRL, in addition, to make your designs out there to the general public, with the identical shopping-cart perform that may robotically collect the required bricks. (Apple customers making an attempt to obtain Studio would possibly get a scary error message stating that it “can’t be opened as a result of Apple can not examine it for a malicious software program.” Our privateness and safety editor, Thorin Klosowski, says that is considerably frequent for apps not offered within the Apple Retailer or ones that don’t come from main builders. Holding the management button down whereas opening ought to repair the issue.)

The studio generally is a bit glitchy. However general it’s extremely simple to study, even for somebody like me, whose software program information begins and ends with Microsoft Phrase and a few mild dabbling in InDesign. What you lose within the tactile Lego expertise is made up for with an infinite quantity of digital bricks at your disposal, without having actual ones take over your own home. For somebody in a good price range, Studio can turn into an ideal possibility for experimenting with MOCs, without having to speculate a ton of cash first.

Sustainability and the way forward for Lego

The Lego Group has set a goal (PDF) for all of its packagings to be sustainable by 2025, and for all of its bricks to be constituted of sustainable sources by 2030. A few of its plant-based items (polyethylene derived from sugarcane) are already displaying up in units just like the Botanical Collection and the Lego Ideas Tree House. We love the initiative, however, these sorts of company vows can typically be powerful to track and verify. The Lego Group places out a yearly progress report to indicate the work it’s doing. This isn’t uncommon for big companies. However, Lego’s objectives have been authorized by the nonprofit Science Based Targets, which helps corporations set clearly outlined, science-based pathways to cut back greenhouse gasoline emissions. Color me hopeful that the future Lego builds may construct a greater future. Or not less than assist a tiny bit.

Footnotes

1. I do know that Lego makes use of all caps when referring to itself, however, this isn’t the home fashion for Wirecutter. Fortunately, our home fashion does acknowledge that “Legos” is wrong for pluralization. That’s a studded hill I’m keen to die on.

2. This whole doesn’t embody yellow Minifigures, unnamed clone troopers (since they’re cloned from a named character), or Imperial Guards (as a result of, thus far, Lego has not made a minifig of 1 with something aside from a black featureless head below the helmet). I did, nevertheless, embody featureless heads of unnamed human minifigs (like Stormtroopers) if there are different variations that were launched with human faces. There are 16 minifigs that fall into this class, two of which have featureless brown heads as a substitute for black, which means that skin-tone variation is a chance even when Lego doesn’t embody a face below a helmet.
