Dual-booting Windows on a Surface Duo is now possible, albeit it’s not recommended

What you should know

  • A guide for dual-booting Windows and Android on the Surface Duo has been created by a developer.
  • When running on the Surface Duo, Windows is severely constrained, including the lack of touch capabilities, cellular connectivity, and a slew of other critical functions.
  • Because the Surface Duo was not designed to run Windows, forcing the operating system onto the device could cause it to malfunction.

Some individuals fantasize about carrying about a foldable Windows-based device in their pockets. Gustave Monce, a developer, is working to make that idea a reality. He was able to get Windows to run on Microsoft’s foldable device, and he collaborated with Simone Franco on a guide for dual-booting Android and Windows on the Surface Duo.
At this point, the Duo running Windows is more of a toy than anything users should expect to use in a practical manner. While the Surface Duo can run Windows, it doesn’t support touch, pen, or several other important features. It’s the only way.
Following the instructions on GitHub will result in a Surface Duo that can run both Android and Windows. The device’s storage will be split in half, with 64GB dedicated to each operating system. Android will function normally, however Windows will require the use of a computer to boot.

This isn’t an intended use case for the Surface Duo, as the nature of the procedure makes evident. Running Windows on the Surface Duo is in early preview, according to the installation documentation.
“We will not be held responsible for any harm to your phone. You accept to bear full responsibility for your conduct if you follow this advice “the guide explains “We’ve done some testing, but this is an EXTREMELY EARLY PREVIEW, so things could go wrong.”

The method has only been tested on the Surface Duo 128GB model. It’s compatible with Android 10 and Android 11 devices.
Monce has spent a lot of time trying to get Windows to work on devices that were never designed to run it. He is well known for getting the complete version of Windows to run on a Lumia 950.
It takes time to hack Windows onto devices, and it frequently relies on gap fillers to provide functionality. However, if you’re a technical user with a spare Surface Duo, you may utilize it to run Windows.
