Here’s what to expect from GTAV on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X

Grand Theft Auto V will be released on Tuesday, March 15th for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S, as well as a standalone version of GTA Online that, for the first time, will not require the basic game to play.

When Rockstar Games revealed that development on GTAVI was starting a few weeks ago, it gave us a glimpse into what’s to come. But now, it’s revealing additional information about what to expect from the revamped games, as well as how character migration will work if you’re a GTA Online fan.

There will be graphical tweaks throughout GTAV, and it will feature three graphics modes: a 4K fidelity mode with ray tracing, a comparatively stripped-back, upscaled 4K (1080p on Series S) performance mode that runs at 60 frames per second (fps), and a “performance RT” mode on PS5 and Series X that targets 60 fps without removing ray tracing. According to Rockstar, loading times have been sped up, water reflections have been improved, and traffic density has been increased – all of the usual new-gen console things. Improved anti-aliasing, “extremely detailed” explosions, and more are included in the game.

Some cars have higher top speeds on newer consoles, thanks to their capacity to stream in the world’s data faster than previous consoles, which is an unexpected perk. The haptics and adjustable triggers of the DualSense controller will be used in GTAV on PS5. Weather effects, directional damage, bumpy road surfaces, and explosions will all be felt thanks to haptics, according to Rockstar.

Rockstar has reportedly put in extra effort to make onboarding new users faster than previously since that GTA Online is distinct from GTA V on Xbox and PlayStation. To get you started, the new Career Builder function will offer you $4 million in-game currency. For novice players, the online mode includes a “redesigned” intro and instruction. You can also jump right into several game modes from the redesigned main menu. New automobiles will be available, as well as a mode that allows you to test drive expensive autos for free.

With the opportunity to migrate your GTAV story progression as well as your GTA Online character to these new versions, the company hopes to entice lapsed gamers to return. (PC players will not be able to transfer their characters to the new games.) Its new migration tool enables cross-gen, cross-platform platforms, allowing Xbox users to switch to PlayStation and vice versa, regardless of whether they’re playing on current-gen or last-gen consoles.

It’s worth mentioning, though, that you can only transfer your GTA Online cash from a PS4 to a PS5 or from an Xbox One to an Xbox Series X / S. Any in-game currency you’ve earned in the game will, however, move across platforms.

For the first three months after debut, PS5 owners will be able to download and play GTA Online for free (so, three months from March 15th). Rockstar hasn’t decided on pricing outside of that window of time, or for Xbox users from the start. It also hasn’t said how much the new GTAV version would cost or whether prior owners of the game will be able to upgrade (of which there are many, many of us).

This latest transfer to the “Gen 9” consoles, as they’re frequently known, is launching in Grand Theft Auto V’s ninth year of development. The game’s fresh polish for the PS5 and Xbox Series X / S consoles should breathe new life into it, and it might just be enough to keep fans occupied until we learn more about Grand Theft Auto 6.
