To play games and more, learn how to connect an Xbox controller to your iPhone

  • You’ll need at least iOS 13 to connect an Xbox controller to your iPhone and play games with it.
  • Almost any Xbox controller, whether from the Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S, can be connected.
  • Before connecting your Xbox controller, make sure it has Bluetooth and is in pairing mode.

You can now connect nearly every popular video gaming controller to your iPhone thanks to some recent improvements. This includes the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S controllers, which are among the best available.

Although not all games accept controllers, many of the most popular games on the App Store do, including nearly all of the Apple Arcade titles.

It’s simple to connect your Xbox One controller to your iPhone. This is how you do it.

Is your Xbox controller Bluetooth-enabled?

Bluetooth allows your iPhone to connect to game controllers. This implies that any controller you attach must also support Bluetooth.

Thankfully, Bluetooth is built into practically every official Xbox controller. The controllers that come with the Xbox One S, Xbox One X, and Xbox Series X/S fall under this category. If you acquired your controller inside the last five years, you shouldn’t have any concerns.

You may need to upgrade your controllers if you’re still using the ones that came with the original Xbox One.

It’s simple to tell if your Xbox One controller has Bluetooth capability. The Xbox button on a Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controller is surrounded with plastic that matches the color scheme of the controller. Non-Bluetooth controllers feature bumper buttons that match the color of the plastic.

How to connect your iPhone to an Xbox controller

If you have an Xbox controller with Bluetooth, you can now:

1. Press and hold the Xbox logo button in the top-center of the controller until it flashes. If it doesn’t flash and instead lights solidly, it’s already attached to another Xbox; if this is the case, press and hold the little button next to the charging connector until the Xbox logo flashes.

2. Open the Settings app on your iPhone, then tap Bluetooth.

3. In the Bluetooth menu, look for a device that says “Xbox Wireless Controller” or something similar. If you tap it, your iPhone will prompt you to pair the device.

4. Pick a pair.

5. If you wish to disconnect the controller after you’ve finished using it, go back to the Bluetooth menu, tap the little I icon next to the device’s name, and then tap Disconnect.
