I know more about dog food than others because I’ve worked in the pet industry for over two decades, both as a veterinarian assistant and as a pet editor and writer. I’ve always fed my dog quality kibble and canned foods, but in the last year, I’ve tried companies like Just Food For Dogs that cook and mail fresh pet food. The company sent samples to feed to my 10-year-old tiny poodle, Jäger, for this review.

The way to order for Just Food For Dogs
Most fresh pet food suppliers need you to sign up for an auto-delivery subscription. That is not the case with Just Dog Food. Autoship is an option, however it is not required.
JustFoodForDogs.com, Amazon, and Petco all sell food for dogs, and the company delivers to all 50 states. You may stroll into one of the company’s eight open-to-the-public kitchens and buy your meal if you’re lucky enough to live near one. Food is also available in person at more than 200 veterinarian clinic pantries, as well as select Petco and Pet Food Express shops.
Just Food For Dogs produces all of its food in USDA-inspected kitchens in California, New York, and Washington, where full-time food safety experts and nutrition advisors can assist you in selecting the finest food for your dog. There are other options for remote consultations.
I had a nutrition consultation over the phone before selecting my samples. My consultation was informative and detailed, however it took some time to go over all of the various food alternatives. You can choose from six different recipes with Fresh Frozen dinners.
Eight different recipes are available for Pantry Fresh dinners. Only one protein source is used in each Fresh Frozen dish. Fish and Sweet Potato and Venison and Squash are both grain-free and gluten-free alternatives. My account was set up and my first order was placed by my consultant. I may now log in at any time and reorder food.
Supply and feeding
I picked two recipes from each of the Fresh Frozen and Pantry Fresh meal lines for this review. Feeding my 20-pound dog with the recipes I tried cost around $30 to $37 per week.
My first delivery arrived on time. I was able to have the food brought right to my door by one of Just Food For Dogs‘ vehicles because I live close to one of their kitchens. My food was wrapped in an insulated bag with frozen gel packs to keep it fresh. I received email notifications when the driver was on their way.
Just Food For Dogs Fresh Frozen meals resemble actual food, as you might expect given the company’s name. Although everything is diced up and blended together, individual ingredients like as ground meat, potatoes, and carrots can be seen. The PantryFresh food has a consistency similar to canned dog chow, but with visible bits of fresh ingredients throughout.
Fresh frozen food must be thawed overnight in the refrigerator before feeding, however Pantry Fresh food can be offered right away. Check the recommended feeding amounts for each recipe to discover how much to give your dog based on their weight. Just Food For Dogs also has a helpful online feeding calculator. Although you can measure how much to feed by cup, I found that using a kitchen scale and measuring by weight was more accurate.
What makes Just Food For Dogs stand out
Both the Fresh Frozen and Pantry Fresh meals are favorites of mine. Every time he gets to his bowl, he licks it clean. Indeed, the kid recently turned his nose up at one of his favorite canned foods, which he has never done before! Just glancing at his little, well-formed poops tells me that Just Food for Dogs agrees with him.
I also appreciate that the USDA has inspected and authorized all of the ingredients for human consumption. I also appreciate that each recipe’s components and nutritional information are provided directly on the container. The nutritional values set by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance and/or growth have been met in all recipes by a team of veterinarians. And here’s a big one: Just Food For Dogs is the only fresh pet food company that has put its recipes through feeding studies.
The underside line
Fresh pet food is more expensive than kibble and canned dog food, which should come as no surprise. Using high-quality, human-grade ingredients, hiring a team of veterinarians to design recipes, and conducting feeding trials and other studies all come at a higher expense. However, many pet owners believe that the health benefits of fresh, minimally processed dog food outweigh the price.
Other fresh pet food brands we’ve reviewed and recommended include Farmer’s Dog, Nom Nom, Ollie, Pet Plate, and Spot and Tango. In terms of choice and purchase options, however, no other fresh pet food supplier comes close. Just Food For Dogs is an amazing choice for pet owners wishing to feed their dogs the best.
Pros: USDA-approved ingredients, no preservatives or byproducts, six different food types, wide variety of recipes to choose from plus rotating seasonal specials, veterinary support and custom diets available, no subscription required (though an autoship option is available), nutrition consultants available
Cons: Expensive; feeding amounts vary by food type and recipe; food packs must be transferred from the freezer to the refrigerator to thaw; fresh food cannot be kept out all day like kibble;
